Learning languages helps prevent the onset of Dementia

By May 30, 2019 No Comments

Mathieson House have introduced Lingo Flamingo, a language for all organisation who support older adults to fight the stages of dementia.

‘Recent studies published by the University of Edinburgh show that those who are able to speak a second language tend to develop dementia up to 5 years later than those of us who can only speak one. This level of prevention is greater than anything currently offered in the fields of medicine or pharmacology’ Lingo Flamingo 2019

The weekly classes are designed to be fun and engaging for residents whilst being educational and supportive in the dementia journey.

The class was launched in Mathieson House on Wednesday 29 May to the delight of many residents who were fully engaged in the lesson. Their first block is Spanish and includes themed days as well as language learning.

We look forward to hearing much more of their stories and activities in the coming week.
