A resident at Renaissance Care’s Jesmond Care Home on the outskirts of Bridge of Don, will be reciting his very own Doric poem to his fellow residents to celebrate their annual Burns Supper this Saturday (25th January).
Quite like Rabbie himself, William (Bill) Hepburn, 87, spent most of his life as a farmer and only discovered his talent for poetry when entering a local poetry competition in 2012. The poem was only recently rediscovered by Bill’s daughter who has since framed the poem for her father.
The poem is written in Doric, a dialect which Bill knows well from growing up in Parish o Rayne. He tells of his local ‘shoppie’ and the interesting wares sold there when he was a boy.
Bill said: “Reciting my poem to my friends on our annual Burns Supper is a real honour – I never expected it to get the reaction it has. I’m looking forward to toasting the haggis, laddies and lassies, and now auld Davie, with a dram come Saturday.”
