I am Valerie Wilson and I’ve been a carer for 35 years and I work at Milford Care Home in Edinburgh. I love my job and the impact I can have on someones life, making even the tough days that little bit better.
What is your greatest achievement within your role?
Knowing that I’ve delivered really personalised care to residents. I’m also proud of the End of Life care we deliver, it’s a privilege being able to care for someone and their family during the end stages, doing this with dignity and respect if rewarding.
What makes you smile most about the job you do?
When I see people happy in their environment and enjoying what they’re doing. Seeing other people smile makes me smile.
What three qualities do you think a person needs to be a good carer?
- To be a good listener
- Be understanding
What’s the hardest thing about being a carer?
Losing a resident who has become a friend, you build some really close friendships in this role.
If you had an extra hour in your day, what would you do with it?
I would take more residents round our local Figgaty Park – it’s beautiful, relaxing and great to be outdoors.
