How Can Sensory Environments Support My Care?

Dementia is a broad and complex umbrella term for diseases affecting the brain with symptoms often resulting in memory loss, thoughts of frustration, and isolation. There is currently no cure – though there are several treatments that support those living with dementia to alleviate symptoms of distress, and continue the things they enjoy.

A Snoezelen room, or controlled multi-sensory environment (MSE), is a specially-designed space that engages the senses to bring feelings of security and balance – making it a safe and engaging option for those experiencing symptoms of dementia, brain injury, or developmental disability.

The stimulating and tailored nature of the space encourages individuals to interact with their surroundings and provides a non-directive therapy that can be led by the residents themselves.

Torry Care Home, of Renaissance Care, recently secured funding to develop its own in-house Snoezelen, multi-sensory space – which is already attracting positive feedback from residents and their relatives. Operations Support Manager for the home, Nadine Garcia, comments on how the residents have benefited hugely from having such a fantastic asset readily available to them - commenting on how the calm and controlled environment has been invaluable in offering residents a safe and quiet space to spend time with loved ones.

Nadine said:  “We were fortunate enough to be granted funding to renovate one of the home’s previously lesser-used spaces and give it a new lease of life. The Snoezelen room has been invaluable – giving residents their own personal sanctuary to enjoy, with many of them choosing to meet and share in this experience with their loved ones due to the quiet, relaxing atmosphere. It’s truly a space that brings them comfort and happiness, and it’s a joy to be able to offer that to them.”
