The Importance of Meaningful Lifestyle and Wellbeing Opportunities Within Renaissance Care Homes

Renaissance Care Group has recently changed the job title of activity coordinators to Wellbeing leads. This change reflects the vision and quality of life approach that we take to care within our services. The belief is that every individual within our homes has opportunities to engage in meaningful activity regardless of diagnosis, mobility or ability.

The change to Wellbeing lead is significant as it reflects a shift in focus from simply keeping residents busy to promoting their overall wellbeing.

Wellbeing leads are responsible for developing and leading the delivery of a wide range of activities that are designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each resident. However, this must come with the support from the wider care team with an understanding that everyone can create meaningful moments with residents and promote positive engagement each and every day.

What is meaningful activity?

Our change to Wellbeing lead recognises the importance of meaningful activity in the lives of older adults – it gives someone a sense of purpose and enjoyment and can come in many forms:

-        Creative activities, such as painting, drawing, crafts, and music

-        Exercise, movement and fitness classes

-        Social activities, such as games, quizzes, and outings

-        1:1 conversations and discussions

-        Learning and development activities, such as book clubs, current affairs discussions, reminiscent sessions and computer classes

-        Spiritual and religious activities

-        Volunteering and community engagement

Meaningful activity can be something that a resident has always loved doing, something new that they are curious about, or something that helps them to connect with others.

The importance of Wellbeing Leads

Our Wellbeing Leads work to create a supportive and inclusive environment where residents feel comfortable participating in activities of their choice and connecting with others.

We witness many benefits in having an inclusive wellbeing and lifestyle programme. These include:

-        Improve physical and mental wellbeing

-        Reduce loneliness and isolation

-        Boost self-esteem and confidence

-        Promote cognitive function

-        Enhance quality of life

-        Volunteering and community engagement

Here at Renaissance Care, we’re committed to providing meaningful lifestyle and wellbeing opportunities for all of our residents. We do this through continually evolving our service provision to ensure it meets the needs of residents within our homes and their family.

We see this change to Wellbeing lead as a positive step forward for the care home sector. It recognises the importance of meaningful activity in the lives of older adults, and it empowers Wellbeing leads to play a vital role in promoting the overall quality of life, purpose and wellbeing of residents.
