War veteran Harry Gamper receives historic Victory Coin

It is very true what they say, every person has a life story, and few are more colourful than 101-year-old Harry Gamper.

It was an absolute privilege to be part of the Victory Coin presentation at Malin Court care home on Friday 3rd December 2021. A special recognition award was presented to war veterans for their incredible efforts during World War 2.

Royal Navy Petty Officer, Callum McCrindle from HM Naval Base Clyde (Faslane), attended Malin Court on Friday to present Mr Gamper with the Victory coin on behalf of Legion Scotland, Poppy Scotland and the Scottish Government. The Victory coin was produced to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and commends veterans for their heroic contribution during the historic events that shaped our country forever.

Only 250 of these coins have been presented and there was particular mention of Mr Gampers contribution to the Allied war effort during World war 2. Speaking about the recognition, Mr Gamper said:

‘I am privileged to receive this accolade. It is an honour and I’m grateful that the war efforts of my generation continue to be recognised. My time within the RAF left me with lasting memories, memories that shaped my life and ones that I am incredibly proud of.’

Harry Gamper has also won campaign medals for his service in France and Germany, including a Battle of the Atlantic medal.

Army photographer, Mark Owens attended Malin Court for photographic coverage.
