Wyndwell Community Connections

We believe that a strong sense of community is the foundation of a happy home. That's why our mission at Renaissance centres around ensuring the continued physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of our residents by keeping them connected to the people, places, and things that are important to them.

One way we achieve this is by maintaining routines and traditions. For instance, our Wyndwell Care Home, located in Peterhead, fully embraces the local areas "Scottish Week" celebration, keeping residents engaged with their community's culture and history.

Peterheads celebration of its Scottish roots dates back to 1961 – when a call-out to a local newspaper for more local activities sparked the idea for a week-long event designed to bring the local community together, something we’re proud to have adopted and continue to champion within our home.

"We’ve loved bringing the culture of the event into our home – and its been a great success. Our main goal was really to create a fun, accessible experience that everyone of all ages could enjoy."

Lynne, Home Manager

Scott, Team Leader at Wyndwell commented on the weeks events, and what inspired them to bring this into the home: “While Peterhead's annual celebration is still going strong, we wanted to recreate that fun for our residents. Inclusivity and a deep sense of togetherness are at the heart of our home. So, we decided to extend the festivities, allowing our residents to enjoy the local events while also continuing the celebration and traditions in the comfort and familiarity of their home. By doing this, we also help residents reconnect with memories of Scottish Weeks past, encouraging conversations and reminiscence, regardless of their ability.”

"It was really fun to take the idea of Scottish Week and get creative with it," said Care Assistant Faye. "I loved getting involved with crafting our props and décor for the week! The residents really appreciated the immersive experience we created, we had so many laughs!"

Bringing the fun of the week right to our doorstep, activities within the home were inspired by the timeless traditions of Scottish Week that our residents know and love - including a staff bake-off, sandcastle competition and carnival day, crowning of the ‘King and Queen’, and red arrow display.

The home manager, Lynne Anderson, echoed this sentiment: “We’ve loved bringing the culture of the event into our home – and its been a great success. Our main goal was really to create a fun, accessible experience that everyone of all ages could enjoy. The Peterhead Scottish Week committee gave us their full support, and we’ve also worked with a community choir who visited us – in keeping with the traditional part of the main programme.”

Well done team Wyndwell.
