Promoting Independence in Care Homes

A woman walks through a care home garden full of bright flowers and vibrant colours

Moving into a care home can be a significant life change. For many, it can feel like a loss of independence; the ability to make everyday choices, to contribute to a household, or simply to do things in their own time and in their own way. We understand how deeply that can affect a person’s confidence and sense of self.

That’s why promoting independence is such a key aspect of what we do at Renaissance Care. While our teams are always on hand to offer help where it’s needed, we believe that every resident should have the opportunity to make their own choices, contribute to daily life, and feel a strong sense of ownership in their home.

Across our homes, we see many wonderful examples of how this is brought to life.

In one home, residents run a small in-house shop where they can pick up everyday items such as toiletries, sweets and small trinkets. Not only does this give residents the freedom to choose what they want and when, it also creates a familiar, sociable experience. Just like popping to the corner shop used to be, it’s an opportunity to chat, browse and feel in control of the little things.

Another home offers a sweet trolley, giving residents the chance to help themselves to their favourite treats. Whether it’s a small chocolate after lunch or a boiled sweet with a cup of tea, these simple choices help maintain daily routines and bring moments of joy.

Elsewhere, a breakfast bar is a popular feature, where residents can help themselves in the morning and even support others who may need a hand. This encourages a strong sense of community and mutual care, as well as allowing individuals to start their day the way they choose.

Outdoors, we see residents take great pride in their gardens. From weeding and tidying to picking pea pods and strawberries, these activities are not only therapeutic and engaging but also foster a real sense of belonging. Many residents speak about the joy of seeing the results of their work and the pleasure of sharing fresh produce with others in the home.

Each of these examples might seem simple, but their impact is profound. They allow people to keep doing the things they enjoy, to make meaningful choices and to continue contributing in ways that matter to them. Above all, they reinforce the message that our homes are not just places where care is provided, but places where people live, belong and thrive.
