Celebrating the Lives of Inspiring Women

Resident Margaret stands on the left hand side ready to party, she is colourful in her lei and skirt. On the right, we have Carol who has a cream cardigan on, a glass of prosecco in one hand, and a party hat.

This International Women’s Day, we are proud to celebrate the remarkable lives and stories of women across our homes.

Each of our residents carries with them a lifetime of experiences, achievements and memories that have helped shape who they are, their communities and careers.

At Renaissance Care, we believe it is important to recognise and honour these stories. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on two inspiring residents from Torry Care Home – Carol and Margaret – whose lives reflect independence, resilience, leadership and love for family.

Carol’s Story: A Life of Independence and Achievement

Carol was born on 9 September 1952 and grew up in Garthdee with her mum, dad and her brother Harry. From an early age, Carol showed that she was bright and hardworking at school. After successfully passing her 11+, she was accepted to attend Aberdeen Academy (Central School), an achievement she was incredibly proud of.

When Carol entered the world of work, she did so during an exciting and transformative time for the North East of Scotland – the early days of the North Sea oil boom. Carol worked for a number of oil companies, building a steady and independent career during a pivotal moment in the industry’s growth.

Her work during this period reflects not only her intelligence and determination but also her willingness to be part of a rapidly developing sector that would go on to shape the region for generations.
Family has always played an important role in Carol’s life. She grew up close to her parents and brother, and she has always maintained strong connections with her wider family. For more than 40 years, Carol has lived in her flat in Torry, creating a home and life within the community she knows so well. In fact, in earlier years her grandad lived in a flat just across the road, keeping family close by.

Carol never married or had children,  instead building a strong and supportive circle of friends who care deeply about her and continue to look out for her. Her story is one of independence, strong family roots and the pride that comes from building a life and home within your own community.

Margaret’s Story: Leadership, Adventure and Family

We are also proud to celebrate the incredible life of Margaret Anderson, whose story is one of leadership, adventure and devotion to family.
Originally from Dewsbury, Margaret dedicated an impressive 30 years to managing Provost Hogg Court. During her time as a care home manager, she led with warmth, professionalism and compassion, making a lasting difference to both residents and staff.

Beyond her career, Margaret lived life with a real sense of adventure. With her first husband, Peter, she travelled across the UK on motorbikes, embracing the freedom of the open road. Later, with her second husband William, she continued exploring – travelling across Europe and America and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Family has always been at the heart of Margaret’s life. She lovingly adopted William’s three children and played a special role in raising her grandson Ross. She delighted in teaching him life’s simple joys – from golfing and riding a bike to playing tennis and bowls.

Margaret was also well known in the family for her homemade fish and chips. As she would often say with a smile: “He’s a growing loon, so he needs all he can get!”

Recently, the team at Torry Care Home held a special reminiscence celebration in Margaret’s honour – a day filled with warmth, laughter and treasured memories that reflected the many chapters of her remarkable life.

Margaret also has a saying she lives by, combining wise words with a playful spirit: “If you can’t be good, be careful.”

Honouring the Women Who Inspire Us

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Carol, Margaret and the many incredible women across Renaissance Care who have lived rich, inspiring and impactful lives.

Their stories remind us of the strength, determination, compassion and humour that women bring to families, workplaces and communities. It is a privilege for our teams to hear these stories and to continue celebrating the people behind them.

Happy International Women’s Day from everyone at Renaissance Care.
