Introducing Namaste Care

Gentle, Meaningful Support for Residents Living with Advanced Dementia

At Renaissance Care, we are always looking for thoughtful ways to enhance the daily lives of our residents, particularly those living with advanced dementia. One approach now being introduced across our homes is Namaste Care, a compassionate, sensory-based approach designed to bring comfort, connection and a sense of calm.

Namaste Care nurtures connection, comfort, and dignity, helping residents feel seen, valued, and truly cared for in every moment.

What is Namaste Care?

The word Namaste is often understood as meaning “the spirit in me honours the spirit in you”, and this reflects the heart of the approach: recognising the value, dignity and individuality of every person.
Originally developed in a small nursing home in Bennington, Namaste Care focuses on meeting the physical, emotional, social and sensory needs of people living with advanced dementia through gentle, meaningful interactions.

Rather than concentrating only on daily care tasks, Namaste creates opportunities for residents to experience comfort, pleasure and human connection in a calm and supportive environment.

Investing in training across Renaissance Care

To support the introduction of Namaste Care across our homes, we have already delivered two dedicated training courses for our Dementia Champions, one in Aberdeen, hosted at our Cranford home, and one in Edinburgh at our head office. These sessions are an important step in upskilling colleagues across all 19 of our care homes, ensuring our teams have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to embed this approach into everyday care.

By equipping our Dementia Champions with specialist training, we are helping to build consistency in how Namaste Care is delivered, while sharing ideas and best practice across our homes.

So how does Namaste Care work?

A Namaste session is carefully prepared to create a warm and peaceful atmosphere. Soft lighting, familiar scents, soothing music and comfortable seating all help create a space where residents can relax and feel secure.

Each session is centred around the individual resident, with carers drawing on life history and sensory preferences to guide activities. These may include:

•    Gentle hand, foot or scalp massage
•    Hair brushing and personal grooming
•    Favourite music or familiar sounds
•    Aromatherapy or comforting scents
•    Simple seasonal sensory activities
•    Regular drinks and snacks
•    Quiet companionship and reassuring touch

A key part of the approach is slowing down. There is no rush, only time, presence and attentive care.

And what are the benefits for residents?

For residents living with advanced dementia, communication can become more difficult, but emotional responses remain incredibly important. Namaste Care helps carers connect in ways that do not rely on words.

Many benefits have been observed, including:
•    Reduced distress and agitation
•    Greater relaxation and comfort
•    Improved emotional wellbeing
•    Increased engagement and responsiveness
•    Better hydration and nutrition through regular encouragement
•    Stronger sense of dignity and reassurance
It can be especially valuable for residents who may appear withdrawn or “silent”, helping them experience comfort and connection even when verbal communication is limited.

At the centre of Namaste Care is the idea of being fully present, observing carefully and responding gently to each person’s needs.

This approach reflects many of the values we believe in at Renaissance Care: kindness, dignity, empathy and personalised care.

As Jozi Stables, Home Manager at Glencairn and facilitator of the Edinburgh training course, explains:

“Namaste Care nurtures connection, comfort, and dignity, helping residents feel seen, valued, and truly cared for in every moment. Here at Renaissance Care, we are introducing Namaste Care to enrich the lives of our residents by creating more meaningful, person-centred experiences especially for those living with advanced dementia ensuring every individual continues to feel a deep sense of belonging, comfort, and compassionate support.”

What’s next?

As Namaste Care is introduced more widely across our homes, it will continue to support our teams in creating meaningful moments that enhance quality of life for residents living with complex needs.

By focusing on what still brings pleasure, calm and connection, this approach reminds us that every interaction matters, and that even the smallest moments of care can have a lasting impact.
