New Leadership Writes Fresh Chapter At Scottish Care Home

Experience is leading the way for improved outcomes for residents at Rosepark Care Home in Uddingston.

Owned and operated by Renaissance Care, Rosepark is embracing new staff, new ways of working and a new vision thanks to its recent appointment of Lauren Kenny as Care Home Manager.

According to colleagues, Lauren, 33, has transformed the day-to-day life at the home since joining in September 2022. She’s an experienced, hands-on leader who has an open-door policy to staff and a “get the hair back and the sleeves up” approach to work.

Her training, qualifications and experience in nursing have prepared her for some of the toughest challenges care home managers can encounter, and she is now loving life leading her team at Rosepark as the care home prepares to open its doors to the local community with its first open day in May.

Lauren said: “Some people joke about expecting a 16-year-old to know what they want to do with their life but I knew, and it was to work in care homes.

“I went straight to uni after school and the majority of my student nursing experience was in care homes. I qualified from the University of Stirling in 2010 and I became a charge nurse within a year and a half of qualifying by the time I was 22, so my ambition has really driven me forward.”

Rosepark is a place where family values are engrained in the woodwork. From relatives who either work or live in the home, to the general approach to care delivery, creating a family feel is part of the team’s vision.

For Lauren, that comes second nature as she’s followed in her mum Margaret’s footsteps into the care sector. Although a social worker now, Margaret also started her career in care so it’s an environment Lauren has been familiar with all her life.

Lauren’s arrival in September has also been the catalyst for an upturn in positive reviews from local families and at the core of that has been strengthening the workforce with a focus on staff wellbeing.

“When you get people who are happy and enthusiastic about coming into their work, the rest falls into place,” she explained.

“I was appointed as manager at Rosepark at the end of September and my biggest focus was to reinforce the newly established Renaissance Care Group priority that was set out around staff wellbeing.

“I met everyone individually and started to tease out some of the issues and just worked with people to find a way to make them feel happier. I like to feel I’m very approachable and speak people the same way.

“Our staff are involved in all our planning and we now have new service level agreements in place and have agreed on a new vision.”

The harmonious environment has also given staff headspace to consider new ways of working which will increase their capacity and, ultimately, improve outcomes for residents. An example of that is the introduction of their new electronic care plan system, Nourish.

As Clinical Governance Manager for Renaissance with responsibility for seven other homes across the Central Scotland region, Lauren is also the company’s lead on implementing the Nourish system and says staff at Rosepark are already benefiting from the change.

The move away from paper care plans has reduced admin, which gives staff more time with residents and helps balance their workload. Turnover has reduced, there is flexibility in the team’s rota and the aim now is to push Rosepark forward to continue delivering sector-leading care.

Lauren said: “Renaissance Care really empowers you to pursue this approach. It’s the best company I’ve worked for in all my years. It’s very supportive, very staff and wellbeing focused, which is like me.

“The company’s ethos is about the people that work for them and the residents they look after. It starts from there, up. As an organisation, Renaissance is very supportive and approachable. It’s the first time I’ve worked for a company where, if they’re considering change or something new, they say: how’s this going to work for the team? If it’s not going to impact positively, we’re not doing it.

“It’s clear for everyone here that Rosepark is part of a wider organisation, and we’re connected to that as well as the wider community.”

Residents local to Rosepark in Uddingston will get a chance to find out more about the Renaissance Care community at Rosepark’s open day on Thursday, 11 May.
