A royal celebration: care home residents in Aberdeen mark the King’s coronation in style

Residents at local care homes in Aberdeen enjoyed a royal celebration this weekend to mark the King’s Coronation.

The care homes, Persley Castle, Cowdray Club, Jesmond Care Home and Torry Care Home, embarked on a weekend of celebrations including afternoon tea and dressing up in Royal regalia, while the home was adorned with bunting, decorations fit for a king, and King Charles memorabilia.

For many elderly residents of the care home, this was a unique experience having also witnessed the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, making the celebrations of the weekend poignant and emotive for many residents.

Lynn Burns, aged 92, resident at Cowdray Club said: “The Coronation celebrations this weekend were so much fun. In addition to settling down to watch the Coronation on the television, we were invited to get into the spirit of the celebrations with a King Charles themed party, a delicious afternoon tea and themed games.

“It is an honour to witness not just one, but two, royal coronations and I am so pleased we were able to mark it in style at Cowdray Club.”

Marybella Robertson, aged 85, resident at Persley Castle Care Home said: “This is a really good day, I've never seen the golden chariot before, but I like it. I am wishing the new King good luck in his new role.

“These traditions are so unique to the UK and are something we should treasure. We can pass on these memories and traditions from one generation to another.

“It’s such a privilege to witness this once in a lifetime event, people from all walks of life are gathered together to share in these memories. “
