WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

Dementia is a word used to encompass 100+ forms of illness and their associated symptoms.

The way people experience dementia varies a great deal from person to person, but it is not simply ‘part of the aging process’. Dementia takes several forms including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Vascular dementia
  • Dementia with Lewy bodies
  • Frontotemporal dementia

These various types of dementia present their own symptoms and it is possible to experience more than one type at a time. At Renaissance Care, we have the knowledge and resources to work with residents living with all types of dementia.

Alzheimer's Disease

Type Symptom
Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia with around 20% of people experiencing it. A further 20% live with vascular dementia and Alzheimers concurrently. Vascular dementia is caused by an impaired supply of blood to the brain, perhaps because of high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms or damaged arteries in the brain.  The disease can progress incrementally, through a series of strokes (for example) which can impact memory, cognitive ability, personality changes and motor control.

Vascular Dementia

Type Symptom
Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia with around 20% of people experiencing it. A further 20% live with vascular dementia and Alzheimers concurrently. Vascular dementia is caused by an impaired supply of blood to the brain, perhaps because of high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms or damaged arteries in the brain.  The disease can progress incrementally, through a series of strokes (for example) which can impact memory, cognitive ability, personality changes and motor control.

Dementia with Lewy bodies of DLB

Type Symptom
Dementia with Lewy bodies is not uncommon, but it is sometimes challenging to recognise as the symptoms don’t always follow the classic dementia pattern. It is caused by an accumulation of proteins in the nerve cells of the brain, which prevent it from functioning as it should.  Hallucinations, sleep disturbance, some mental impairment, shifting abilities and some Parkinson’s-disease-type physical symptoms can be experienced with DLB.

Frontotemporal Dementia

Type Symptom

This is a rarer form of dementia found in younger people – generally between 45-65 years old. The disease is progressive and caused by damage in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Frontotemporal dementia

takes three main forms; behavioural, language or semantic.
Behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia presents itself in reduced inhibitions, impulsive and compulsive behaviours, food cravings, apathy and diminished empathy. Progressive Non Fluent Aphasia affects the person’s ability to use language – their speech may be slower, they might struggle to comprehend complicated sentences or they may have problems with using the correct words, sounds and grammar. Semantic dementia is very rare but can be experienced in much younger people. It causes our retained knowledge to lose its meaning. This impacts mood and behaviour, it impairs the ability to spell and pronounce words accurately, to recognise others and it can cause addiction, apathy and depression.
