WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF DEMENTIA?

A diagnosis of dementia can be overwhelming, not only for the person receiving the diagnosis, but also for their friends and family.

If you have been diagnosed with dementia, it may have come as a shock. You may feel inundated with information, advice and emotion including fear, anger and sadness. This is understandable and why we urge you to take time to process the news, speak to loved ones or speak to an expert about what you should do next. You might feel panic, worry, shame or even a sense of relief at finally understanding your symptoms. At Renaissance Care we understand how you are feeling and, when the time is right for you, we can help you make the decisions you have to and access all the support you might need.

After a dementia diagnosis, it can be helpful to:

  • Understand more about the disease and how to manage the symptoms
  • Connect with other people living with dementia
  • Contact a support network within the community
  • Take things one day at a time setting daily goals
  • Make plans for future support and decision-making

Support for family after a dementia diagnosis

If a family member has been diagnosed with dementia, you may feel anxious about what the future may hold. You may have concerns about how their health, wellbeing or symptoms will change., this can include physical, emotional or behavioural changes. You may feel worried about the best course of action to enable them to live a fulfilling life with dementia. You may have feelings of distress and guilt when it comes to finding the right level of dementia care for their needs. These feelings are all very common and there is a lot of support available for relatives of people living with dementia. Please do share with us any fears or anxiety, we will always do our very best to support you and help guide you through this journey.

Additional support is always available

At Renaissance Care we understand that living with dementia can be challenging for everyone. Living at home with dementia is encouraged and supported, however looking after a relative with dementia can feel overwhelming, and it can take its toll both physically and emotionally. There will come a time when people living with dementia need additional support:

Regardless of your situation, when additional support is needed, Renaissance Care is there. We can assume the personal and residential care of your family member, leaving you more quality time to spend with your relative. The transition into long-term residential care is never an easy decision but it is often the best option for the person living with dementia, as well as their loved ones.
