Lynne Mekshi: Investing in Our People
How Our Growing 'Champion' Pathways are Transforming Care
At Renaissance Care, we want our workforce to view social care not just as a job, but as a deeply fulfilling, lifelong career. We believe that when you invest heavily in your people, excellence in care naturally follows.
To turn this philosophy into action, we have developed a robust workforce development initiative that currently features 11 distinct Champion pathways - a number that continues to grow as we identify new areas for professional development. Today, more than 150 ambitious staff members are participating in these programmes, acting as ambassadors within their chosen specialisms. The pathways empower them to channel their personal passions into specialised care, inspire their peers, and develop their knowledge and skills in ways that add an extra layer of meaningful support for residents.
A perfect example of this in action is our Namaste Care Champion pathway which we proudly introduced to our dementia ambassadors in March ahead of a wider planned rollout. Namaste Care is an innovative, sensory-based philosophy designed to bring peace, comfort, and connection to residents living with advanced dementia. Because this Champion role relies heavily on emotional intuition, touch, and sensory understanding, it beautifully demonstrates how our staff are transforming their natural empathy into specialist expertise.
To look at how these growing pathways are transforming both our staff and our care, we sat down with our Head of Quality, Lynne Mekshi, who has been driving the Champion & Ambassador programme across the organisation.
Why Structured Training Matters
When rolling out specialist training programmes across 19 care homes, success takes more than what can be read online or in a booklet. To truly embed learning, Renaissance Care’s approach focuses on real human investment. This includes hands-on development that seamlessly blends theory with practical, real-world technique.
Q: From a quality perspective, why was it vital to invest in a structured training programme for these Champion pathways?
Lynne: "Hands-on training builds practical skills that written work can certainly support, but simply cannot teach. Getting together in an environment that is interactive, engaging, and fulfilling for both our residents and staff is always going to be preferable.
Consistency in care standards across all our homes comes from meaningful engagement. By investing in dedicated face-to-face sessions, we ensure our staff don't just understand the theory behind our programmes - they feel confident practicing it on the floor. Ultimately, the Champions programme builds an incredible avenue of development for our teams, giving them true ownership over a specialist area and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to support their peers as well as their residents."
Empowering Our Staff
When our teams have the right tools, the positive impact ripples throughout the entire home environment. Providing specialised training goes far beyond resident care; it directly lifts the confidence and peace of mind of the people working in our homes every day.
Q: How does equipping our teams with specialist training - such as the Namaste Care pathway - change their day-to-day experience and confidence?
Lynne: "Care can be an emotionally demanding profession, so giving our teams scenario-based learning and concrete techniques to soothe, connect with, and comfort residents is incredibly powerful. Whether a resident is experiencing a complex mix of emotions or is completely non-verbal, this training builds the foundational skills our staff need to feel truly confident in reading what our residents need. It transforms their day-to-day experience from feeling uncertain in difficult moments to feeling deeply empowered and connected to the people they care for."
Part of a Bigger Commitment to Our Teams
The incredible turnout for our Champions programme to date - with over 150 staff members participating across 11 disciplines - is a testament to a team that is equal parts ambitious within their careers and deeply dedicated to the wellbeing of the people they support.
Q: How do these growing Champion pathways fit into Renaissance Care's broader commitment to career development and upskilling?
Lynne: "We want to give our teams clear, rewarding avenues for progression. Providing specialist, sought-after training like this ensures our team members are constantly growing their professional skill sets, finding their niches, and realising that social care offers a massive scope for long-term career growth."
