Mamma Mia! Renaissance Care Hosts Spectacular ABBA-Themed Parties for Residents across Scotland

Residents of Renaissance Care’s homes across Scotland are kicking off the Eurovision celebrations with spectacular ABBA-themed parties, 50 years after the iconic group won the European music competition with its smash hit Waterloo.

Residents and staff at Jesmond and Torry Care Homes in Aberdeen and Rosepark Care Home in Uddingston dusted off their disco shoes and donned their best ABBA-inspired attire for a day of music, memories, and pure joy.

The homes were decked out in Eurovision and ABBA-inspired décor with bright banners and shimmering posters while residents enjoyed a Swedish inspired buffet and channelled their inner Dancing Queens, taking part in karaoke and having a boogie to all the classics.

Jesmond Care Home even enjoyed a surprise performance from singer Megan Wright, who is part of a professional ABBA tribute band.

Jessie Clark, aged 100, resident at Rosepark Care Home said: “We had a fantastic time getting into the groove of Eurovision with friends and family at our party. I can remember when ABBA won with Waterloo back in the 1970s – everyone was walking around whistling that for weeks after!

“I think Eurovision is such a great event, it has the ability to unite countries and spread joy. If there’s one thing we can all bond over, no matter our age, it’s definitely music. Everyone loves a good tune to sing along to.”

Yvonne Richardson, Operations Director at Renaissance Care, said: “ABBA brought people together with their music when they won Eurovision in 1974 and still do to this day, proving that age is just a number when it comes to enjoying music.

“There’s always a great buzz in the homes when we put on events like these, and it was a joy to see all the residents embrace the spirit of Eurovision as they sang and danced away to their favourite ABBA hits.

“Eurovision aims to bring audiences and countries together which closely aligns with our care approach to maintain our residents’ personal connections with people and individual interests, ensuring their time with us is meaningful and enjoyable.”

This year's Eurovision contest is taking place in Malmö, Sweden, home to ABBA, and will be broadcast live on TV by the BBC from Tuesday 7 May to Saturday 11 May.

Renaissance Care has 17 homes across Scotland in areas including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Lanarkshire.

The private care homes vary in size and style, ranging from small boutique style residential care homes with 20 rooms to larger purpose-built care homes for assisted living offering specialist nursing and dementia care.
